Based on the book written by German author Bernhard Schlink.
The director of the film is Stephen Dauldry, who had previously directed “The Hours” and “Billy Elliot”.
Main actors and actress: David Kross as the young Michael, and Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet. Plot: The story of "The Reader" is set in Germany after the Second World War. Returning from school, teenager Michael Berg suddenly feels ill and Hanna, a stranger twice her age helps him get home. After recovering from scarlet fever Michael goes to see Hanna to thank her. Thus begins a passionate and secret love affair between them. Michael discovers that Hanna loves to be read and their physical relationship deepens, until one day Hanna disappears mysteriously leaving Michael confused and heartbroken. Eight years later as a law student, Michael is attending as an observer a court which is trying collaborators of Nazi Germany, and is stunned to meet again with his lover, this time as a defendant. As the woman's past is revealed, Michael discovers a deep secret that will have a major impact on both their lives.
Review: Kate Winslet’s acting is spectacular. There are also some scenes where the moral dilemmas the characters must face are very impressive. For instance, when Michael realizes that Hanna is illiterate and therefore, she can’t read. When he hesitates whether to visit her in prison or not. During the trial when she confesses that she was in charge of a group of prisoners and could not let them go, and as a result, most of them were killed in that prison.
And there are beautiful moments too: the reading scenes, their first caresses, the atmosphere of the house.
I would definitely recommend seeing it. Now it´s easy to find it on DVD.
